Border Collies are considered the smartest and most intelligent dog breed in the world. They are incredibly active, curious, and get bored easily. These characteristics make them too much for some owners to handle, and many Borders end up in shelters all across the US.

Just because a dog ends up in a shelter doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with them. Some owners had to give their dogs up because they couldn’t take care of them properly anymore. These dogs need a lot of activity. Some owners get a Border without realizing what they are getting themselves into.

If you want a Border but don’t want to buy it from a breeder, the next logical thing is to adopt one from a Border Collie rescue. There are breed-specific rescue organizations that specialize in saving these dogs. They might be your best chance for adopting a pureblooded Border. Here are some of the Border Collie rescues you can get in touch with;

1. Northern California Border Collie Rescue & Adoptions

The first Border Collie rescue we will put on this list is the Northern California Border Collie Rescue & Adoptions. This non-profit consists exclusively of volunteers who are dedicated to saving, rehabilitating and rehoming Border Collies. These guys will gladly help potential adopters with any questions about the breed and the adoption process. If you live close to the Sacramento valley or Sierra Nevada foothills, these guys are your best chance to get one of these dogs.

2. Glen Highland Farm

Glen Highland Farm started their Border Collie rescue mission in 2001, and they have rehomed more than 3.000 dogs. They originally took in puppies and seniors and did all they could to find them suitable homes with loving, new families. Since 2017, these guys focus exclusively on senior dogs because they are often considered nearly impossible to adopt. However, senior Borders still need help and new homes. Plus, you will get a dog that is already housebroken and trained.

Majority of their rescue efforts are focused on Central and Northern Texas, but if they can, they will help dogs all over the State. They are very strict in their adoption process, so you might want to prepare for an interview with them. This Border rescue likes to make sure potential adopters will make great pet parents. That is the main reason many of their adoptions are a smashing success.

Heart of a Border Collie Rescue saves dogs from different life areas. Some Borders in their care were employed as farm dogs, and others were family pets that became too much to handle. They will also pick up stray dogs and help them get into the best possible health and ready for adoption. Their rescue efforts are focused on the State of Minnesota, but they will consider adopters from surrounding States as well. Dogs in their care are placed in foster homes, and the rescue provides them with vet care, meds, food, and anything else a Border might need.
