Choosing the right name for your big dog can be tricky. Big dogs usually have larger-than-life personalities, so you’d want to pick a name that will fit your dog. There are a few things and rules that might help you decide, but you should always go with your gut in the end.
You know your puppy, what they’re like, and their defining traits, and ultimately, you will know how to pick the best possible name for your big dog. Nevertheless, we decided to make a list of awesome big dog names that we personally would consider naming our big dog. Before we get into that, here are a few rules that might help you choose.
Make a list
Before you decide on one name, you should make a list of all potential names you like for your dog. This process should last at least a couple of days because you can never know where and when you will hear a name you might like. Make a list, and you will have in writing all suggestions that sound good to you.
Test the name
After your big puppy arrives, you can start testing the name. It is entirely possible that you absolutely love a name, but your puppy is completely unresponsive to it. You have to make a good fit that will suit both you and your puppy. Your puppy needs to react to the name you have given them because you will use the puppy’s name a lot. Plus, you might think a name sounds good, but it just doesn’t roll over the tongue nicely.
Short vs. long big dog names
As a general rule, choosing a short name works better. Names you can say quickly and authoritatively are a lot better than long, dragged-out names. Imagine a scenario where your dog runs into ongoing traffic. They are oblivious to what is going on, so you’d want your dog to have a name you can quickly shout. Barkminster Fuller might be an awesome dog name, but saying it in a tight situation can be tricky. Of course, long names can work if you use a nickname mostly. Barkminster Fuller can be Barky.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: One of the best pieces of advice we can give you is to avoid naming your dog with a name that sounds like a command. A name like Kit sounds like the command “Sit!” which is just a recipe for confusion.
