Teddy Bears are beloved toys that kids absolutely love. Teddy Bears protect them while they sleep, and they are a friend in the darkest of times. Kids love their teddys, and the closest thing we can get to a live Teddy Bear is a fluffy dog breed.

Different dog breeds tick all the necessary boxes for this category. They are incredibly fluffy, have button noses and kind eyes that will melt your heart. Teddy Bear dog breeds have become an unofficial category, and some owners and clubs describe breeds as part of that category.

Here is the list of our favorite Teddy Bear dog breeds.

1. Newfoundland

This is probably a breed that is as close to a Teddy Bear as it can be. They are huge, fluffy, and endlessly kind. This patient creature will take care of you at all costs. There is nothing they love more than being close to their family and cuddling. Actually, there might be one thing they love more - napping. These dogs are expert nappers. After all, it is not easy carrying around so much weight.

Newfoundlands had a different start, and their goal wasn’t always to be a peaceful family pet. This was a powerful working breed that Canadian fishermen used for hauling heavy nets. Newfies are expert swimmers, and they have saved people from drowning on many occasions. How is that for a Teddy Bear dog?

2. Samoyed

Teddy Bears can be white, and there is nothing better than a fluffy dog that looks like a little cloud of happiness. These dogs can make excellent pets to active families, and if you have children in the family, Samoyeds will be tireless playing partners. They will love sharing the kid’s bed, and they will provide plenty of warmth and protection, just like a Teddy Bear.

Samoyeds are Nordic dogs, and they used to be slightly bigger in the olden days. They were a working breed that developed thick coats that could provide plenty of isolation in harsh northern climates. Some of these dogs still need that protection, but most of them are just active family companions that will love keeping you entertained and happy.

3. Toy Poodle

Toy Poodle is a breed that has the size of an actual Teddy Bear. These tiny dogs are fluffy and incredibly intelligent. They have a hypoallergenic coat that barely sheds, so this is a Teddy Bear dog breed that is relatively easy to maintain. Their coat is really soft, and they will be glad to spend their time in their owner’s lap. They love being showered with attention and affection.

Toy Poodles are tiny, so many owners seem to forget that they are still pretty active. These dogs are one of the most intelligent dog breeds out there, and they need plenty of mental and physical stimulation. Just because they are small doesn’t mean they won’t have the same needs as larger dogs.

4. Cavapoo

The Cavapoo is a handsome little designer breed that enjoyed a huge popularity boost in recent years. These dogs are soft, and their eyes will win over anyone that encounters them. Cavapoo is a mix between the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Poodle (usually Miniature). It is considered a hypoallergenic breed, which is a characteristic they inherited from their Poodle parents.

Cavapoos are crossbreeds, which means you can never be absolutely sure about their looks and temperament. There is a chance they might end up more on one side of the family, mentally and physically. However, most of these dogs make excellent companions full of love and affection for their families. This is another breed that has Teddy Bear-like features.

5. Old English Sheepdog - Bobtail

The OES is another large breed that is soft as a Teddy Bear. These dogs are known for their shaggy, fluffy, thick coats, making them ideal cuddling partners. One of the best things about these dogs is their sense of humor. If that sounds surprising, you have never met an Old English Sheepdog trying to entertain their family. They are clownish, and they love playing with kids.

Not only are these dogs great family pets, but they are also pretty smart. Bobtails thrive on work, and they will be happiest in an active family that loves hiking or running. They were once active working dogs that kept flocks of sheep safe from predators. Their fluffy, Teddy-Bear-like coat protected them from sharp teeth and claws.

6. Chow Chow

Chow Chow is probably the original Teddy Bear dog. Their history dates back thousands of years. These dogs have fluffy, soft coats and many characteristics that make them look like real live Teddy Bears. Not only that, but the Chow Chow will become an active family guardian. These dogs have guarded Buddhist monasteries for more than 1.500 years, and this is a trait these dogs still carry with them.

Chow Chows are believed to be one of the oldest living dog breeds. Scientists believe these dogs have come around right after the domestication of the dog. These dogs are unique - they have two more teeth than any other dog breed, and they have blue-black tongues. This is one special Teddy Bear dog breed.

7. Zuchon

The Zuchon is a designer breed that was bred to be the best possible companion. It is a mix between a Shih Tzu and the Bichon Frise. Both of these breeds make wonderful family companions, and it is no surprise that their mixed puppies make one too. This is the breed whose official nickname is the “Teddy Bear dog,” so we simply had to include them in this list.

This adorable little designer dog will follow you everywhere you go, much as a real Teddy Bear should. They inherited their love for people from their Shih Tzu parents and their entertaining nature from the Bichon Frise part of the family. Keep in mind that these dogs are tiny, so they should be handled with care. If you do that, they will shower you with undying affection and adoration.
