Dog Breed Characteristics
Grooming
Pembroke Welsh Corgis have a short, thick, and weather-resistant undercoat and a coarse outer coat. Regular brushing is advised if you want to keep the hair under control. With regular brushing, you will remove all dead hair from your dog's coat and keep their coat healthy.
Pembroke Welsh Corgi coat colors:
- Red
- sable
- Fawn
- Black and tan
The rest is basic care: trim their nails when needed (if they don't wear them down naturally), and brush their teeth weekly to prevent tartar buildup and bacteria development. Regularly check their ears for any sign of redness or a bad odor that can indicate an infection.
You can wipe their ears with a cotton ball dipped into an ear cleaner. The key for your dog to get used to all the things mentioned above is to start early with them. Make a positive experience for the dog, full of praises and rewards, and you can be sure that your dog will enjoy all these things when they grow up.
Exercise
Pembroke Welsh Corgi dogs are medium active, and they will need a proper amount of daily activities to be happy. Playing with his owner in the house, chasing the ball, or just long walks can all do the trick and keep this dog satisfied. If you provide him with enough daily activities, you don’t have to worry that your dog will misbehave.
Socialization
As with all other dogs, even Pembroke Welsh Corgi requires proper and early socialization in order to trust your dog. With correct socialization, your dog will learn how it’s supposed to behave in many different situations he may find himself in. The socialization process starts as soon as you bring your Pembroke Welsh Corgi puppy home. Expose him to many different situations, people, dogs, and sounds.
They can learn to react accordingly and understand that they don’t need to be scared of strangers and other dogs. They can adapt to any environment as long as you secure them with plenty of physical and mental activity.
Pembroke Welsh Corgi and kids
Pembroke Welsh Corgis are excellent family dogs that will get along with every family member, including children. Take note that kids need to be taught how to properly play and interact with a dog so Pembroke Welsh Corgi can enjoy their company. If they are raised together from an early age, they will be playing parting, and they will enjoy spending time together.
Pembroke Welsh Corgi and other animals
Pembroke Welsh Corgi gets along with other dogs and animals, including cats and even smaller animals. With the right socialization, you don’t have to worry that your Pembroke Welsh Corgi will not get along with anybody.
Heath
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is generally considered a healthy breed, but they are prone to some health issues and concerns like any other dog breed. These dogs have an average lifespan of 12-13 years.
When getting any breed, the breeder must show you the health tests that they have done for their breeding dogs. Dogs must be adequately tested because taking a chance and hoping that the puppy’s parents are healthy is a risk no one should ever take.
Only healthy dogs should be bred because that is the only way to ensure that bloodlines will remain healthy and without any problems. Health problems associated with this breed are;
- Hip dysplasia
- Epilepsy
- Cataracts
- Progressive retinal atrophy
- Von Willebrand’s Disease
Pembroke Welsh Corgi breeders
If you decide that this is the right dog for you, now it's time to find a good and responsible Pembroke Welsh Corgi breeder. Buying a dog from such a breeder will provide you with a healthy puppy who will not have health and temperament problems. These dogs became very popular, and many unethical and bad breeders started to breed these dogs to earn money without worrying about puppy health, temperament, and well-being.
Buying a dog from a responsible breeder will cost you more money, but you can be sure that you will get a healthy puppy. If you cannot buy a dog, we advise you to search for local animal shelters because there is a chance you can find a Pembroke Welsh Corgi dog in it.
When you bring your new puppy home, start with the training and socialization immediately. By doing so, you will end up with a well-behaved dog whom you can trust. Provide him with enough daily exercise for him to be happy. If you devote your time and energy to this dog, you can be sure that you will end up with a companion for life.
