Last updated: Aug 31 2023

Petit Bleu de Gascogne is a scenthound dog breed originating from France used for hunting. They share the same characteristics as the larger version of these dogs - Grand Bleu de Gascogne. The only difference between these two dog breeds is their size and what they were hunting.

The Grande version was used for hunting large game, while the Petit Bleu de Gascogne was used for rabbit and hare hunting.

These are extremely active dogs that love to spend their time with their family because Petit Bleu de Gascogne is pack dog. If you leave them alone for too long, you can expect your Petit Bleu de Gascogne to start howling. With the correct socialization and enough activities, you will get the most lovable family dog.

Grooming

Petit Bleu de Gascogne has a short and very thick coat that needs only weekly brushing to keep their coat clean and healthy.

Petit Bleu de Gascogne coat colors:

  • Entirely mottled – black and white, with tan markings

Since these dogs have droopy ears, you should be very careful and check them regularly. They are prone to developing an ear infection, and because of that weekly check their ears for any sign of infections – bad odor, redness, wax build-up, etc.

With these dogs, the rest is basic care. Trim their nails if the dog doesn’t wear them out naturally, bathe them a few times a year, and brush their teeth so they secure fresh breath and healthy gums.
