Grooming

Finnish Hounds have short hair that is very easy to maintain. Weekly brushing will be enough to keep the dog looking good.

Finnish Hound coat color:

  • Tricolored – black mantle, rich tan color, and white markings

You will also have to check their ears regularly for any signs of infections (bad odor, redness, etc.). You can wipe their ears with a cotton ball dipped into an ear cleaner. Finnish Hound's teeth should be brushed weekly to remove tartar build-up and to secure fresh breath and healthy gums. Their nails should be trimmed when you hear their nails clicking on the floor.

Exercise

Finnish Hounds are highly active dogs, and you will have to provide them with a lot of daily activities. Long walks in the woods, hiking, and playing with balls can all do the trick to keep your dog happy and healthy. Finnish Hound is not a very easy dog to train.

They can be stubborn, and you must be very consistent with training. You must be firm and consistent, and you can be sure that your dog will listen to you.

Socialization

Since this is a hunting dog breed, early socialization is a must. From the moment you bring your Finnish Hound home, start the socialization process. That way, you can be sure that your dog will develop into a well-behaved dog with whom you will not have any problems later in life.

The best thing you can do is expose your dog to many different situations, people, dogs, animals and sounds to learn how to properly react. You can even socialize with your dog at home: dress differently and act differently so your dog can’t recognize you immediately.

Finnish Hound and kids

Finnish Hounds are an excellent choice for families with kids, and they will be great playing partners for them. Remember that no matter how good your dog is, you should never leave him alone with kids so any unwanted behavior wouldn't emerge.

Finnish Hound and other animals

Finnish Hound gets along with other dogs and enjoys their company. With proper socialization, you don't have to worry that your dog will become aggressive or not get along with other dogs. Since this is a hunting dog in some cases, Finnish Hound can start chasing smaller animals.

Health

Finnish Hounds have a life expectancy of 11-13 years. They are generally healthy dogs but can be prone to health problems. These problems include:

  • Hip dysplasia
  • Ear infections

To be sure that your dog will not develop any inherited diseases, we advise you to only buy it from a responsible and official dog breeder. Those breeders regularly perform various health tests on their breeding dogs so they can be sure that their puppies will not develop inherited problems.

Finnish Hound breeders

Finnish Hounds are not so popular dogs around the world, so you must be prepared that you will have to wait for your puppy if you decide that this is the best dog for you. While searching for breeders, always find the good ones, and if you do so, you don’t have to worry that your dog will end up with inherited diseases. While talking to breeders, always ask them to show you the health certificates of their dogs.

Since this is an active dog, you will have to provide them with a lot of activities. If you are not a very active person, we advise you to search for different less active dog breeds. That way, you won’t end up with a dog who will be unhappy because his physical needs are not met.
