Hamiltonstovare

Last updated: Aug 31 2023

Hamiltonstovare is an agile and affectionate hunting dog breed from Sweden. This is a versatile scent hound that was originally bred for fox and hare hunting. These dogs have an extremely high prey drive, which is uncommon for scent hounds.

In the late 90s, these dogs were used as service dogs in the US. Besides their working abilities, Hamiltonstovare is also a great pet. They can be stubborn, but they are food motivated, and they can be trained easily.

Hamiltonstovare are still rare dogs, and if you are interested in getting one, you must be prepared that you will have to wait for your next puppy.

Grooming

Hamiltonstovare has a harsh coat that lies close to the body. Regular brushing is enough to keep these dogs in order. Their main color is tricolor – black and tan with white markings.

Since these dogs have droopy ears, you should be very careful and check them regularly. They are prone to developing ear infections, and because of that, weekly check their ears for any sign of infections – bad odor, redness, wax build-up, etc.

With these dogs, the rest is basic care. Trim their nails if the dog doesn’t wear them out naturally, bathe them a few times a year, and brush their teeth so they secure fresh breath and healthy gums.

Exercise

Hamiltonstovare is a highly energetic and active breed. They were bred to work all day, so these dogs need a lot of daily exercise. These dogs need an active lifestyle to be happy. They love to be outside and be part of the action, whether running and chasing balls, playing, jumping, or jogging.

If you are thinking about getting an Hamiltonstovare, make sure you have enough free time and energy to spend outside playing and training your Hamiltonstovare. If your schedule can’t allow you that, consider getting some less active breed.

Training

Hamiltonstovare was bred for hunting, and because of that, they will need proper training if you want your dog to develop into a well-behaved dog. Also, their high prey drive can be a problem you must take care of.

When training an Hamiltonstovare, make sure you use positive training methods. Never use fear, punishment, or pain because it is cruel and can result in an overly shy or even aggressive dog. Be firm, fair, and consistent, but use only positive reinforcement!

These dogs are eager to do whatever their people ask of them. Involve as many treats as you can and keep the training sessions interesting.

Socialization

To ensure that you end up with the best possible dog, early socialization is a must. Start socializing your Hamiltonstovare as soon as you bring him home. With proper socialization, you will ensure that your dog doesn't become shy or aggressive.

Expose your Hamiltonstovare to many different dogs, people, sights, and sounds, and that will teach him how to properly react in many different situations.

Hamiltonstovare and kids

Early socialization and proper training can teach them to behave even when children are around. Their temperament makes them more suitable for families with older children. If you train and socialize your dog well, your children will get a great playing partner that has plenty of energy.

These dogs can play for hours upon hours without getting tired or bored.

Hamiltonstovare and other animals

These dogs can get along well with other dogs and can enjoy their company.

They are not the best fit for other pets. They have a strong prey drive, so they will most likely try and catch smaller animals such as gerbils, hamsters, squirrels, or rabbits. They can learn to get along with the pets they are raised with, but our advice would be never to leave them unattended.

Health

Hamiltonstovare are generally healthy dogs, but like most of the dog breeds in the world, they can suffer from some health problems. Those problems include:

  • Hip dysplasia
  • Elbow dysplasia
  • Ear infections
  • Epilepsy
  • Bloat

If you want to get a puppy with the best possible health, you should never buy him from an irresponsible dog breeder. Official and responsible dog breeders regularly check their breeding dogs, and they will not breed dogs if there is a possibility that the puppies will end up with inherited diseases.

Hamiltonstovare breeders

Hamiltonstovare are not so popular dogs around the world, so you must be prepared that you will have to wait for your puppy if you decide that this is the best dog for you. While searching for breeders, always find the good ones, and if you do so, you don’t have to worry that your dog will end up with inherited diseases. While talking to breeders, always ask them to show you the health certificates of their dogs.

Since this is an active dog, you will have to provide them with many activities. If you are not a very active person, we advise you to search for different less active dog breeds. That way, you won’t end up with a dog who will be unhappy because his physical needs are not met.
