As dog owners, we need to keep our dogs safe from different parasites that can quickly deteriorate their health. Luckily, we have vets and the whole veterinary medicine on our side. There are various products that can help us in this mission, and one of these products is the Sentinel Spectrum. Keeping dogs parasite-free and healthy can be challenging, but our job is slightly easier with products like this one. Here’s what you should know about Sentinel Spectrum for dogs and why you could try it.

What is Sentinel Spectrum for dogs?

The shortest possible description of Sentinel Spectrum is - a heartworm preventative. However, heartworms are not the only parasites Sentinel Spectrum will kill. This product is also effective against fleas, roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms, and whipworms. These parasites can make your dog’s health really bad, so using products like this is necessary.

Sentinel Spectrum for dogs uses three main active ingredients that will kill parasites;

  • Milbemycin Oxime - destroys the parasite’s nervous system (especially worms).
  • Lufenuron - Blocks the flea eggs and larvae from growing and developing.
  • Praziquantel - The most common chemical used for clearing insects in pets. It will cause spasms and paralysis to the worm’s muscles.

The best thing about Sentinel Spectrum is that it is a single product that will effectively protect dogs against different parasites.

How is it administered?

Another great thing about this product is that it comes in the form of chewable tablets. This is standard practice since it is easier to get your dog to eat a tablet that actually tastes good. Sentinel Spectrum comes with a beefy flavor, and you can be sure most dogs will absolutely love eating it.

This parasite preventative comes in ready-to-use packages that are already packed for dogs of different sizes. If you have a dog that weighs 50 pounds, simply choose the correct package and give them the chewable tablet. You don’t have to think about correct dosages or proper administration. It is extremely easy to use.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The FDA restricted the use of this drug, so your dog will have to get a prescription from a licensed vet.

Sentinel Spectrum is given to dogs once a month, and the correct dosage is based on the dog’s weight.

Is it effective?

All of the information above might sound really good, but the first of the critical questions dog owners want to know the answers to is, “Is Sentinel Spectrum effective?” The taste, smell, and easy-to-use traits don’t matter much if the product is ineffective. Luckily, Sentinel Spectrum for dogs is highly effective.

In the initial study Merck performed, 100% of dogs were cleared of hookworm infections.  They tested the product on 113 dogs, and all of them showed signs of improvement after receiving the treatment. The effectiveness against other parasites and preventing flea eggs from hatching is just below 100%. It is safe to say this is an extremely effective product.

Is Sentinel Spectrum safe for dogs?

The second most important question is, “Is Sentinel Spectrum safe for my dog?” Plus, if there are any side effects, we are sure you’d like to know what to expect. The good news still continues.

In the study performed by Merck, puppies were exposed to 5 times larger doses of Sentinel Spectrum, and all clinical signs were resolved after 24 hours. No dog was hurt, which means this product is very safe. However, like with any other drug, some mild side effects are expected. The most common Sentinel Spectrum side effects reported by dog owners whose dogs used this product were;

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Tremors
  • Panting
  • Lethargy
  • Ataxia (only one case)
  • Shallow breathing

Keep in mind that most of these side effects are connected to cases where dogs were exposed to much larger (wrong) doses of Sentinel Spectrum. It is entirely possible, if not probable that your dog will have absolutely no side effects.

Where to get Sentinel Spectrum for dogs?

Like we already said, you can only get Sentinel Spectrum with a vet prescription. The first step you’ll have to take is to take your dog to see your vet. The vet will prescribe this product, and only then can you pick it up in your closest pet shop or online shop. A great way of ordering it is through Chewy. You can order it online if you present the prescription your vet wrote for your dog.
