The 7 Dangers of Letting Your Dog Sleep in Your Bed
25.07.2021.
Many dog owners allow their dogs to sleep with them in their beds. To be completely honest, all of our team lets their dogs sleep with them in their beds. Naturally, we decided to compile a list of all potential dangers of letting your dog sleep with you in your bed. Be warned, this is not something your vet will tell you. Here is why you shouldn’t let your dog sleep with you in your bed;
1. Danger of being comfortable
If you hate being comfortable and relaxed in your bed, you shouldn’t allow your dog to sleep in it with you. Dogs have rhythmic heartbeats, and they radiate heat. Who would want to have their four-legged best friend with them in their bed as a private little comforter? It is even worse if you have a large dog. Their soft coat and warm bodies are the worst things to snuggle up against during those cold winter days. Plus, they love you, and they will be there for you no matter what, so why let them be there for you during the night?
2. You hate feeling secure
Many dog breeds make excellent guard dogs, so why would you want one close to you in your bed? If you live alone with your dog, weird noises and sounds can be scary, and breeds like Schnauzers, Dobermans, or Amstaffs might want to protect you if anything happens or you get uninvited house guests. Dogs are alert, and they have a lighter sleep than we do, which means if anything weird happens, they will wake up and alert you. Many of us simply feel a lot safer if we have our personal protectors close to us.
3. You hate feeling happy
Dogs are natural antidepressants, and interacting with one will cause a boost in oxytocin production. Oxytocin is the “happy hormone,” and it was scientifically proven that personal touch and cuddling with your dog will boost its production. If you hate feeling happy, you should absolutely forbid your dog from sleeping in your bed. You already share everything with your dog, and sure, your dog makes you happy the rest of the day, so why would you want that in your bed at night? You might be in grave danger of your dog waking you up with sloppy kisses all over your face.
4. You don’t care about your dog’s comfort
If you are one of those owners that absolutely don’t care about your dog’s comfort, you shouldn’t allow them on your bed. Sharing your bed might be good for them, but who cares about that, right? Dogs love their owners, and you probably noticed they want to spend every waking moment with them, so denying them the closeness at night is no big deal. Dogs love the warmth, comfort, and being close to their beloved owners, and cosleeping will do wonders for their stress levels and mental health. They love comfy beds and bedding, but if you don’t care about your dog’s comfort, that isn’t really important.
5. People didn’t do that before
Some owners find it weird, and they think that allowing your dog to sleep in the same bed as you is some sort of a modern thing that is unnatural. They are absolutely right! Although, humans and dogs have been sharing beds since the domestication of dogs. Even the early humans figured out dogs make fantastic sleeping buddies. They allowed dogs in their bed for the same reason many modern dog owners allow dogs in their beds. They felt protected, warm, comfortable and wanted to keep their four-legged friends close to them.
6. You don’t want a stronger bond with your dog
Sleeping studies have proven that sharing a bed with your dog will cause a deeper and stronger bond between dogs and their owners. However, if you want to stop that from happening, you should definitely forbid your dog from sleeping in your bed. Who would want a dog that loves them more because they allowed them to sleep in their bed? It makes no sense. Although, dogs who love and bond with their owners are more likely to listen to commands and behave. They will do anything to please their owners and learn things faster. Anyway, if you want to avoid creating a stronger bond with your dog, you should absolutely deny them access to your bed.
7. You hate waking up with a smile
Scientists have proven that smiling leads to facial wrinkles. Nobody wants that, so if you want to avoid waking up with a smile on your face and a wagging tail in your bed, you shouldn’t allow your dog to sleep in your bed. Sure, dogs can help lower your blood pressure, relieve anxiety and stress, and make you feel happier, but those wrinkles are unwanted. It is true that dog owners that allow their dogs to sleep in their beds wake up happier, but it is best to avoid starting your day with a smile.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: The only real reason you shouldn’t allow your dog to sleep in your bed is if you have dog hair allergies. They can be an issue, but even then, exposing yourself to dog hair might help ease the body’s overreaction to harmless triggers like dog hair.
