Modern life is pretty fast, and sometimes we don’t have enough time to do what we would like to. The truth is that some dogs require a lot of our attention, and they can’t stay home alone for too long. Luckily, there are low-maintenance dog breeds that require a lot less time and effort from their owners.

Don’t get us wrong, all dogs require attention. You should train and socialize them. Make time for a playing session, and if you are not currently able to provide it to them, think about postponing getting a dog.

Another option is co-owning. You can talk to some friends or family members that have more time on their hands, and you can split your dog’s needs. They can take the dog for a walk while you are at work, and you can take the dog on the weekend or when your schedule clears.

The point of all this is that no one should be deprived of a dog’s love because of their schedule. Some dog breeds require a lot less maintenance than others, and one of the best things about pureblooded dogs is that we can pretty accurately guess their needs. They might have thinner coats or calmer characters, making them suitable for staying alone for longer periods.

Here are 7 low-maintenance dog breeds.

7. Whippet

The Whippet might be an athletic breed, but they won’t run if they don’t have to. Mind you, they will need regular walks and a running session twice a week, but they are considered low-maintenance because they don’t require too much grooming. They have short, smooth coats that don’t shed that much. If these dogs get dirty, you can use hypoallergenic wet wipes and clean them.

These dogs are considered relatively quiet. They are not vocal, and above all, they enjoy a good nap in a cozy dog bed or a sofa. They are adaptable and will adapt to different conditions in a heartbeat. Make sure you shower them with love and attention when you can, and you will have a delighted low-maintenance friend.

6. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

It can seem that a longhaired dog breed couldn’t possibly be low-maintenance - but it is. They will require at least one brushing session a week to keep their coat from matting and tangling, but these dogs won’t require a lot of exercise or training. They are naturally peaceful and calm, which makes them ideal companions for people with busy lives.

Cavaliers are known to be very sensitive. They can sense their owner’s feelings and moods and can adapt to situations pretty well. They are usually very good with kids and other dogs, so socialization shouldn’t require too much time and effort.

5. Dachshund

The lovely little Doxie is an extremely popular family dog, but it can also be a great low-maintenance companion to people with hectic schedules. They don’t shed much, and these dogs will be happy playing inside the house. They have a great nose, so hiding treats around the house or the apartment is an excellent source of fun for them.

Not all Dachshunds are the same; they come in three varieties - the shorthaired, longhaired, and wirehaired. The wirehaired and longhaired will need a bit more grooming. Still, the shorthaired Dachshund variety is an ideal low-maintenance companion breed.

4. Chihuahua

Chihuahuas don’t need a lot to be happy. They can have random bursts of energy where they can start running or playing. Still, in general, they are peaceful, low-maintenance dogs that love being in their owner’s company. They will need occasional brushing and a bath, but even that is not too often.

Chihuahuas come in two varieties; shorthaired and longhaired. The shorthaired type is easier to maintain. They don’t require as much grooming as a longhaired one does. Plus, these adorable little dogs have a long lifespan.

3. English Mastiff

The English Mastiff is a giant dog breed. The thing about giants is that they have to spend a lot of energy just to move, so they prefer not doing it. The key thing with Mastiffs is to endure their puppyhood when they tend to be a bit goofy and have a talent for getting into trouble. As they grow older, they will become very calm and peaceful.

Another thing about giant breeds is that they can eat - a lot. Keep in mind that even though these dogs are considered low-maintenance, they can rack up quite a bit of expense. Also, they have a shorter lifespan than medium-large and small dog breeds.

2. French Bulldog

If you are looking for a smaller dog that is low-maintenance, then the adorable French Bulldog is the dog for you. These lovely little dogs are not too active, nor will they expect to go on wild adventures with you. They will enjoy a peaceful life as long as they have a cozy place to sleep in and a cuddling session with their owners.

Frenchies are very popular, and if you are looking to get one, make sure you get it from a responsible breeder. Poorly-bred dogs are prone to different health issues, and a brachycephalic breed like this one especially.

1. Greyhound

Greyhounds might be large dogs, but they don’t require constant attention. They are pretty famous for their incredible speed, and some of these dogs can run at an impressive 45 miles per hour. It would be easy to assume they are active, but the truth is - they are not. They are pretty lazy and will enjoy naping most of the day. They will also love spending time with their owners, but they will not require constant attention.

In fact, some of them can be relatively independent and will prefer your attention on their terms. These dogs are very elegant, and they have a thin coat that doesn’t shed that much. Other than 2-3 daily walks and a running session on the weekend, these dogs don’t require much.
