This Border Collie Poodle mix is gaining popularity and riding the way other designer breeds, like Labradoodle, started. What type of pet is a Bordoodle?
The first thing you need to know about the Bordoodle is that they are a crossbreed. Unlike pureblooded dog breeds, crossbreeds don’t have a constant set of characteristics they pass onto their offspring. However, based on Bordoodles that were bred so far, we can say there are a few characteristics they all share;
Height:
12 - 22 in
Weight:
30 - 60 lb
Origin:
Unknown
Life Expectancy:
12 -15 years
Intelligence
One of the main personality traits you will surely notice in Bordoodles is their intelligence. These crossbreeds come from two of the most intelligent dog breeds in the world - Borders and Poodles. They are working breeds that are capable of performing complicated tasks. Border Collies still hold the title of the most intelligent dog breed in the world, and Poodles are right behind them.
It is not surprising that Border Collie Poodle mixes are intelligent. This trait comes from both sides of the family, and these dogs can do wonderful things if enough time and training owners dedicate to them. However, such intelligent dogs need a lot of mental activity. They can get bored quickly, and when they do, they will become destructive. If you decide to go for a Bordoodle, make sure you give them plenty of mental activity.
Energetic
One of the things Border Collie owners are aware of is how energetic their dogs are. Poodles are not far behind. Both breeds have plenty of energy, and most Border Collie Poodle mixes are like that. The Bordoodle seems like an endless source of energy that will have to live an active lifestyle. There is nothing worse than a dog with plenty of cooped-up energy. They become unhappy, bored, and develop behavioral problems.
Dog Breed Characteristics
Training, long walks, hiking, jogging, cycling, or anything else you can think of that will help your Bordoodle spend their energy will have to become a regular part of your life. Border Collie Poodle mix will have to have a very active life to be happy truly. Luckily, training them is a pleasure because they are fast learners.
Playful
Bordoodles are incredibly playful. This isn’t a massive surprise since their active character drives them to different activities. They will love playing fetch, hide and seek, and goofing around with kids and adults. They inherited a slight clownish character from their Poodle parents. They love to be in the center of attention, and they love entertaining their families.
Loyal and protective
This is not a trait that is usually associated with Borders or Poodles. However, many Bordoodle owners say their dogs developed into protective family dogs that look over their entire families. They are alert and can even be suspicious of strangers. They will not be too happy or keen about leaving their family, especially kids, unattended in parks. If you are not careful, this type of behavior can become problematic. Make sure your Bordoodle is well-trained and socialized from the beginning.
A word of caution
These traits we mentioned above are something that many Bordoodles share are not set in stone. This is a crossbreed, and crossbreeds can inherit different character traits. Genes are unpredictable, and you can never be entirely sure how a crossbred dog will turn out.
Physical appearance
The physical appearance of the Bordoodle is not constant. Some puppies can take more after one or the other side of the family. Some dogs will have black and white coats, and some come in colors closer to Poodles’. Most of these dogs are between 12 and 22 inches tall and weigh between 30 and 60 pounds.
Coat
The most important thing in Poodle crossbreeds is their coat. Most Poodle mixes came to life to create dogs with low-shedding coats. However, there is no guarantee a Bordoodle puppy will end up with a low-shedding or hypoallergenic coat. Borders are heavy shedders, so don’t be surprised if your dog ends up with a coat that sheds quite a bit.
Health
Many designer dog breeders claim their dogs possess something called hybrid vigor. There is some truth to the resilience of the first-generation crossbreeds, but you should be skeptical when breeders talk too much about it. The only way they can assure you the Bordoodle puppy will be healthy is if they bred two healthy dogs. You must take a good look at the puppy’s parents and make sure they are in the best possible health.
Puppies that come from healthy parents have a better chance of living a healthy life. However, breeders will rarely tell you that Bordoodles are prone to health issues coming from both sides of the family. In the short history of the Bordoodle, vets have noticed these health issues;
- Hip dysplasia
- Progressive retinal atrophy
- Epilepsy
- Allergies
The life expectancy of a healthy Bordoodle is 12 - 15 years.
In conclusion
Getting a mixed dog breed is not advisable. There is no kennel club that controls or regulates the breeding practices of breeders that breed crossbreeds. The main issue is that most of these breeders use questionable dogs for breeding, and they sell them as high-end designer breeds. The average price of a Bordoodle puppy is between $700 and $1.500.
