Smaland Hound

Last updated: Sep 04 2023

The Smaland Hound breed dates back to the 1600s when hounds similar to present-day Smålandsstövares were bred to European hounds from Poland, Germany, and the Baltic regions after The Great War. They were mostly developed by farmers.

The Smålandsstövare is a scent hound primarily used to hunt foxes and hares, and it needed to be able to hunt alone rather than in a pack. They are a very gentle breed but also very protective of their property and family and unsure of strangers.

Smålandsstövares are high-energy dogs that require a lot of time to run and play or some other activities.
