Dog Breed Characteristics
Grooming
Montenegrin Mountain Hound dogs have short, dense, and rough coat that requires proper caring. Weekly brushing is required to keep the dog looking good. Their main color is black with tan markings above the eyes, on the muzzle, and on the lower parts of the legs.
Since these dogs have droopy ears, you should be very careful and check them regularly. They are prone to developing an ear infection, and because of that, weekly check their ears for any signs of infections – bad odor, redness, wax build-up, etc.
With these dogs, the rest is basic care. Trim their nails if the dog doesn’t wear them out naturally, bathe them a few times a year, and brush their teeth so they secure fresh breath and healthy gums.
Exercise
Montenegrin Mountain Hounds are highly active, and you must be prepared that you will have to spend a lot of time outside if you want your dog to be happy. These dogs will enjoy various fun activities, including chasing, hide and seek, returining ball, etc.
If you meet their needs, you can be sure that your dog will be well-behaved in the house, and you don't have to worry that he will develop behavior problems.
Socialization
Since this is a hunting dog breed, early socialization is a must. From the moment you bring your Montenegrin Mountain Hound home, start the socialization process. That way, you can be sure that your dog will develop into a well-behaved dog with whom you will not have any problems later in life.
The best thing you can do is to expose your dog to many different situations, people, dogs, animals, and sounds so they can learn how to properly react. You can even socialize with your dog at home: dress differently and act differently so that your dog can’t recognize you right away.
Montenegrin Mountain Hound and kids
As a pet, the Montenegrin Mountain Hound can be wonderful. They get along great with all family members and love spending time with them. They especially love kids, and they can be great playing partners for them.
No matter how good your dog is you should never let them play without supervision, so any unwanted behavior would emerge (nipping, tail pulling, etc.)
Montenegrin Mountain Hound and other animals
Montenegrin Mountain Hounds get along with other dogs and enjoy their company. With proper socialization, you don't have to worry that your dog will become aggressive or wouldn't get along with other dogs. Since this is a hunting dog in some cases, Montenegrin Mountain Hound can start chasing smaller animals.
Health
Montenegrin Mountain Hounds are generally healthy dogs, but like most of the dog breeds in the world, they can suffer from some health problems. Those problems include:
- Hip dysplasia
- Bloat
- Ear infections
- Ectropion
If you want to get a puppy with the best possible health, you should never buy him from an irresponsible dog breeder. Official and responsible dog breeders regularly check their breeding dogs, and they will not breed dogs if there is a possibility that the puppies will end up with inherited diseases.
Montenegrin Mountain Hound breeders
If you made a decision that this is the right dog for you, now it’s time to find Montenegrin Mountain Hound breeders. To ensure you will end up with the healthiest dog possible, we advise you to search only for responsible Montenegrin Mountain Hound breeders.
That way, you can be sure that the puppy will have the best possible start in life. Buying a dog from an official dog breeder will cost you more money in the start, but when you know that they will be healthy and that will have a good temperament it is worth it.
Montenegrin Mountain Hounds are pretty rare dogs so you must be prepared that you will have to wait for your puppy a bit longer.
