Breed History

The dense and rocky region of Vendee required that dogs in that area are tough, with great stamina and weather resistant coat. Lower class hunters needed a slower dog so they could easily follow him during the hunt. Through the breeding programs, Basset Griffon Vendéen was created. Further breeding programs produced variants of these dogs as we know it today -Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen and Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen.

These two dog breeds were officially separated in 1950.
