The Pyrenean Mastiff is a large breed of dog originally from the Aragonese Pyrenees in Spain. The breeds main function was to guard and protect herds and its masters from the attacks of wolves, bears and thieves. Even though this breed traces its origin to ancient Molosser dogs, until recently it was fairly rare outside its place of origin. Little is known about the exact origins or history of the breed but the earliest documentation comes from the 1977. This breed is very intelligent and independent at times and because of that it can be hard to train. Even with socialization this breed will always be cautious around strangers.
