Bucovina Shepherd

Last updated: Aug 31 2023

Bucovina Shepherd is a large dog breed used primarily as a guard dog and a fierce livestock protector. It is thought that these dogs have existed since Roman Empire. Today Bucovina Shepherds are extremely rare dogs even in their native land – Romania. Their large-sized helped them to scare wolves and bears white they were protecting and guarding.

Since these are big dogs with great endurance, they are not fit for apartment living. They need a lot of space where they can spend their energy. Bucovina Shepherd is a very loyal dog breed that forms a strong bond with its family members.

This dog is affectionate toward kids and will be a great protector for them.

Bucovina Shepherd is not recommended for first-time dog owners. If you are interested in getting one of these dogs, you must start with training and socialization as soon you bring your puppy home and that way you can ensure that your dog will not misbehave.

Brush their teeth at least three times a week to prevent tartar buildup and infections. Ensure you use products that are made especially for dogs as human products could potentially harm them. Trim their nails if they don’t wear them down naturally.

A good indication is if you can hear them clicking on the floor while they walk. Clean their ears and check for signs of redness or infections. Use a cotton cloth and never insert anything in their ear canal.

To prevent your dog from being pushy or dominant, you must start with the training early. Without the right training, they can become aggressive, and you can have a lot of problems.

Like any other dog breed, the Bucovina Shepherd should start the socialization process immediately. Dogs that are not well socialized are prone to behavioral problems and might react badly to situations they are not familiar with.

There are many ways you can socialize your Bucovina Shepherd, and the most important thing to do is to get your dog familiar with the different situations they can find themselves in.

Bucovina Shepherd and the kids

Bucovina Shepherds are an excellent choice for families with kids, and they will be great playing partners for them. Remember that no matter how good your dog is, you should never leave him alone with kids so any unwanted behavior wouldn't emerge.

These are big dogs, and you must supervise their playtime since these dogs could easily unintentionally knock over a child and hurt them.

Bucovina Shepherd and other animals

Bucovina Shepherds are not the best choice if you have other dogs in the house. Although with the right socialization, they can learn to get along, they are best suited to be the only dog in the house.

These dogs could perceive smaller animals as prey, and because of that, it is not advised that you have smaller animals in the house living with this dog.

Bucovina Shepherds have a life expectancy of 10-12 years. They are generally healthy dogs but can be prone to health problems. These problems include:

  • Hip dysplasia
  • Elbow dysplasia
  • Gastric dilatation volvulus

To be sure that your dog will not develop any inherited diseases, we advise you to only buy it from a responsible and official dog breeder. Those breeders regularly perform various health tests on their breeding dogs so they can be sure that their puppies will not develop inherited problems.

Bucovina Shepherd breeders

Bucovina Shepherds are pretty rare dogs, so you must be prepared to wait a bit longer for your puppy.

When getting a dog, the most important thing is to get it from a responsible and reputable Bucovina Shepherd breeder.  Responsible breeders will breed dogs that don’t only look good but have great characters as well. You must find a good Bucovina Shepherd breeder that can help you learn about this breed and make an informed choice about getting a dog with these characteristics.

When you bring your new puppy home, start with the training and socialization immediately. By doing so, you will end up with a well-behaved dog whom you can trust. Provide him with enough daily exercise for him to be happy.

With this dog, you must be firm and alpha for him to listen to you. If you devote your time and energy to this dog, you can be sure that you will have a life companion.
