Small Munsterlander

Last updated: Aug 31 2023

Small Munsterlander is an intelligent, confident, and versatile hunting dog originating from Munster, Germany. Although they have the same name as Large Munsterlanders, they are not related. Small Munsterlanders are excellent hunters both on land and in water, and they have great hunting abilities for all types of work. In Germany, this dog is called Kleiner Munsterlander.

These dogs are very devoted to their master and are friendly toward other people. These dogs will do best in the active family that loves to spend their time outside exploring. If you provide them with enough daily activities, they will be the best possible pets and companions.

FUN FACT: These dogs as still most popular in their native and –Germany.

Grooming

Regular brushing will take care of the dead hair, and since these dogs are moderate “shedders,” brushing will also help you keep the place clean and hair-free. Dogs’ coats have natural, protective oils that can be washed off if they are being washed too often.

They will also need other basic care; brush their teeth at least three times a week. Check their ears for signs of infection and redness, bathe them regularly, and trim their nails if they don’t wear them down naturally.

Exercise and personality

If you’re thinking about getting a hunting dog capable of conquering the most challenging terrains and working tirelessly, the Small Munsterlander should be a strong candidate. These dogs have an impeccable sense of smell and can track prey even days after they left the trail.

As a pet, the Small Munsterlander can be wonderful. They get along great with all family members and love spending time with them. They will usually choose their “main” owner, the one person they will form a special bond with. They aren’t made for a watchdog’s role because they are relatively friendly, even with strangers.

They are an energetic breed but won’t mind a lazy afternoon if they had a couple of active days before. They are best suited for homes with yards where they can explore and spend their excess energy.

Socialization

The Small Munsterlander is widely known as a true hunting breed, and their temperament might need some adjustment for them to become good pets. Hunting breeds are usually extremely active, and they need a decent amount of daily exercise if you want them to behave as family pets.

Only when their activity needs are fulfilled are these dogs ready to train and become obedient.

Like with any other breed, the Small Munsterlander reacts best to positive training methods. Their natural hunting instincts are always present, and their hunting skills only need to be sharpened. If you are training them to become house pets, you will need to include many treats and praises.

Make training a fun and interesting experience, and you will start noticing good results pretty soon. Never use punishment as a training method; correct the dog’s unwanted behavior calmly and continue with the training. Negative training methods can result in shy or even aggressive dogs.

Kids and pets

The Small Munsterlander might be a hunting breed, but they can quickly adapt to family living and a beloved family pet’s role. These dogs have become a lot better adapted to house life through selective breeding, and their hunting instincts and working ability haven’t been promoted so strongly.

If they are adequately trained, the Small Munsterlander can become as good a pet as any other breed. They will have a lot more energy than your average lap dog, but if you live an active life, you can have a great companion that will gladly follow you on all your adventures.

These dogs can even learn to coexist with other pets, but they should never be left unsupervised with smaller pets because of their genetic prey drive.

Health

Like any other dog breed, the Small Munsterlander can potentially develop health problems. If you are buying a dog, ensure the breeder can provide you with the necessary health tests and guarantees. Always ask to see the results of tests from the puppy’s parents. The health problems these dogs are associated with are:

The Small Munsterlander is generally considered a very healthy breed that can live 12-14 years.

Breed History

Small Munsterlander was originally bred for all-purpose hunting – based on their instinct rather than training. They hunted prey of any size, point the game to the hunter, retrieved the game, and track the wounded game.
