Trim their nails monthly, regularly brush their teeth to secure a fresh breath, and prevent bacteria development and gum diseases. During all these things, check their ears for any signs of redness or bad odor, which can indicate infection.

Dandie Dinmont Terrier Exercise

Training with lots of treats and positive reinforcements is recommended for the best results. These dogs are also eager to please, and that makes training them a lot easier.

Breed History

Dandie Dinmont Terriers are one of the oldest distinct terriers. These dogs didn’t change much since the 1700s, and that is not the case with other dog breeds. Sir Walter Scoot mentioned these dogs in his book “Guy Mannering”. That book was published in 1814. Before that time, all terrier dogs were simply called terriers.

In his book, Sir Walter called these dogs Dandie Dinmont, and the name stuck with the breed. In 1875 in Scotland was formed a club of Dandie Dinmont terriers and the standard for these dogs was written.

The breed was very popular in the late 19th century in England but the Second World War nearly destroyed the breed. After the war, many breed fanciers and breeders started to work hard on re-establishing the breed. Even today, this is a rare breed and the Kennel Club put Dandie Dinmont Terriers on the list of endangered breeds.
