In most cases, these dogs are used as gun dogs and you can rarely find these dogs in a companion role. However, they can be excellent family dogs and fit great into companion life.

Grooming

For Ariège Pointer dogs, regular weekly brushing will be enough to keep the coat healthy and the dog looking good. These dogs don’t require frequent baths, only if they roll into something dirty or smelly.

Ariège Pointer coat colors:

  • Pale orangy fawn
  • Brown flecked with fawn
  • Brown tickled white

You will also have to check their ears regularly for any signs of infections (bad odor, redness, etc.). You can wipe their ears with a cotton ball dipped into an ear cleaner. Ariège Pointer's teeth should be brushed weekly to remove tartar build-up and to secure fresh breath and healthy gums. Their nails should be trimmed when you hear their nails clicking on the floor.

Exercise

Ariège Pointer is an active breed who requires a lot of activities to be happy. They were bred for working purposes, and because of that, they are not the best fit for apartment living. They need a lot of space where they can wander around and spend their energy.

It is not uncommon for these dogs to work for hours without taking a break, and because of that fact, if you want to have a happy dog, you will have to meet their needs.

Socialization

Since this is a hunting dog breed, early socialization is a must. Start the socialization process from the moment you bring your Ariège Pointer home. That way, you can be sure that your dog will develop into a well-behaved dog with whom you will not have any problems later in life.

The best thing you can do is to expose your dog to many different situations, people, dogs, animals and sounds so they can learn how to properly react. You can even socialize your dog at home: dress differently and act differently so that your dog can’t recognize you right away.

Kids and other animals

Ariège Pointers are an excellent choice for families with kids, and they will be great playing partners for them. Take note that no matter how good your dog is, you should never leave him alone with kids so any unwanted behavior wouldn't emerge.

Ariège Pointer gets along with other dogs and enjoys their company. With proper socialization, you don't have to worry that your dog will become aggressive or wouldn't get along with other dogs.

They are not suited for living with other smaller animals because of their high prey drive. They will immediately chase all smaller animals.

Health

Ariège Pointers have a life expectancy of 12-15 years. They are generally healthy dogs but can be prone to health problems. These problems include:

  • Hip dysplasia
  • Ear infections
  • Bloat
  • Patellar luxation

To be sure that your dog will not develop any inherited diseases, we advise you to only buy it from a responsible and official dog breeder. Those breeders regularly perform various health tests on their breeding dogs so they can be sure that their puppies will not develop inherited problems.

Ariège Pointer breeders

Ariège Pointer is not a very popular dog across the world, so you must be patient if you want to get this dog. When trying to find Ariège Pointer breeders take your time and explore all your options. We advise you only to search and contact official and responsible dog breeders because if you do so you can be sure that your future puppy will have the best possible start in life  - good and responsible breeders take good care of their dogs and provide them with everything they need.
