Grooming

The Bulldog coat is very easy to maintain. Brush him a few times a week with the rubber brush. During the shedding season, it's good to brush him a few extra times during the week to keep his looks at the best. They come in a variety of colors: solid white, solid red, red brindle, fawn, and piebald.

The main thing to look after is the wrinkles on his face. They need to be checked regularly, and you need to watch for any signs of infections or irritations. His skin must be clean and dry. The best way to clean his wrinkles is with a cotton ball, which can be dipped in peroxide. The rest is basic care: trim his nails as needed.

Bulldog

If you hear nails clicking on the floor, they need to be trimmed. Brush his teeth regularly to prevent tartar and bacteria buildup and to secure healthy gums and teeth. Ears should also be checked regularly to prevent wax buildup or infection.

Are Bulldogs lazy?

These are inactive dogs, and they don't require a lot of exercise. A few short walks will be enough for this breed. Because of his short muzzle, they have breathing problems during hot and humid weather.

Don't take him for long walks or jogging because, after about 15 minutes of running or playing, he will be ready for a nap. The Bulldog is suited for apartment living. Always provide them with an air conditioner and freshwater, especially during hot days.

Because of his massive head, they are not good swimmers because the head drags them straight down. If you have a poll, you need to protect your dog from falling into the water.

FUN FACT: Bulldogs will overeat if they get the change because they are greedy eaters.

Socialization

Like any other dog breed, these dogs require early socialization. Most of all, Bulldog dogs love to chew things and toys, so it's important to teach your dog to release on command anything that he is holding in his mouth. Also, these dogs tend to be overprotective of their food, so you need to train them from an early age that it is ok to take food from the bowl without them being upset.

They are sweet dogs, and they want to please their owner. Expose your Bulldog to many different sights, people, and sounds to secure a well-rounded dog. This breed will learn new things and tricks with positive reinforcements and not hard training.

So when you train your Bulldog, you must prepare a lot of treats and praises.

Bulldog

FUN FACT: Bulldogs are very stubborn dogs, but if you train them right, they can achieve excellent results in competitions such as obedience, agility, and flyball.

Are Bulldogs good pets?

Bulldogs are a friendly, easygoing, and sweet dog breed that will get along with anybody. Some of them can be aggressive with strange dogs, but mostly they are quite good with other dogs and pets. Because of his courage, he is an excellent watchdog.

He loves his family and especially his children. They are excellent companions for kids, even young ones. This dog will let kids play with him, and if he's had enough, he will just walk away from them. Always make sure to teach your kids how to properly approach and play with the dog, and just because the Bulldog will put up with a lot from kids doesn't mean that he should.

Take good care of your dog during hot summer days. Other conditions that this breed is prone to are

  • cherry eye, dry eye (when natural tear production is inadequate),

  • patellar luxation (when the patella, which has three parts-the femur (thigh bone), patella (knee cap), and tibia (calf)-is not properly lined up).

Bulldog

FUN FACT: Bulldogs are known for having chronic flatulence.

There are a few recommended health tests you should perform to ensure the dog is healthy: cardiac exam, patella evaluation, and tracheal hypoplasia radiographic evaluation.

Bulldog breeders

If you decide to buy a Bulldog, make sure you read all information about this breed to make sure you know how to properly take care of him. Most of all make sure you find a good breeder who takes good care of his dogs and puppies.

These dogs are prone to many health problems, and because of that, you need to find a good reputable breeder, and with that, you can reduce the possibility of your dog being sick. Breed History

The Bulldog as we know it today is a lot different from his ancestors. Evidence suggests that the Bulldog dogs were created in England during the 13th century for bullbaiting (a „sport“ in which a pack of dogs were fighting staked bull and the spectators bet on the outcome).

These Bulldogs were bred particularly for this bloody sport and they were taller and heavier than today's Bulldog breed. In 1835 England banned these types of „sports“ and that was the turning point for Bulldog development. Bloodsport went underground, and instead of bull-baiting, they created dogfighting.

Bulldog

People wanted to create more aggressive and faster dogs with a fiery spirit and they began to cross various terriers with Bulldog to create a dog with such characteristics. Eventually, they created bull-type terriers, including the Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bullterrier, etc.

At that time Bulldog breed faced extinction and that was the time when Bulldog lovers decided to save the breed and then started the long process of transforming from fighting to a companion breed. Dogs with a good temperament were selectively chosen for breeding and the ones with the aggressive temperament weren't allowed to reproduce.

These breeders created the version of the Bulldog as we know it today.
