The Great Pyrenees is a large breed of guardian dog. This is very old breed used for hundreds of years by shepherds and one of the first descriptions of the breed dates dates from 1407. The real spread of the Great Pyrenees out of its mountains developed in the 19th century with the birth of Romanticism. The breed was not completely standardized until 1874. This breed is appreciated not only for their beauty but their temperamental qualities. In nature, the breed is very gentle with children, confident and affectionate. They can be hard to train. One singular characteristic of the Great Pyrenees is the unique double dewclaws on each hind leg.
