This breed dates back to the 1600s when hounds similar to present day Smålandsstövares were bred to European hounds from Poland, Germany and Baltic regions after The Great War. They were mostly developed by farmers. The Smålandsstövare is a scent hound primarily used to hunt foxes and hares and it needed to be able to hunt alone rather than in a pack. They are a very gentle breed, but also very protective of its property and family and unsure of strangers. Smålandsstövares are high energy dogs that require a lot of time to run and play or some other activities.
