The Irish Water Spaniel is a dog breed that is the biggest and one of the oldest of spaniels. The Irish Water Spaniel is a native Irish dog breed that is at least 1000 years old. It is thought in Irish folklore to be the descendant of the Dobhar-chú, it is impossible to know because the official “father” of the breed, Justin McCarthy, left no breeding records.
