The Briard is a very old dog breed of large herding type, originally from France. It is thought that a Briard like dog appeared in a hunting book as early as the 14th century. This breed was used during the first World War by the French troops as messengers, alert dogs and to search for wounded soldiers. Today they are employed by law enforcement as search and rescue dogs, police and military dogs and as a family dog.
